World premiere of "Imprint"
Michel van der Aa’s new work Imprint will be premiered on 27 August 2005 at the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland. It was written for the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra as part of the project ‘About Baroque’ in collaboration with the Siemens Arts Programme.
The 14-minute composition is scored for a chamber ensemble consisting of two oboes, harpsichord, portative organ and strings (4.4.3.2.1). This virtuoso work, with a solo violin and cello as its focal point, exhibits Van der Aa’s characteristic theatrical elements.
Subsequent performances of Imprint include concerts at the Berlin Festival, Huddersfield Festival, Holland Festival, Fränkischer Sommer and in the Konzerthaus Dortmund.

Looking ahead
Michel van der Aa is currently working on After Life, a new opera commissioned by De Nederlandse Opera and the ASKO ensemble.
In addition to the composition itself, Van der Aa is responsible for the film projections and is also stage director for the production.
The opera is based on the film of the same name by the Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-Eda. After Life is set at a way station between Earth and Heaven. There, guides have less than a week to help the recently deceased sift through their memories for one defining moment to take with them to Heaven. The opera centers on the grudging respect that develops between Mr. Walter, an undistinguished old man coming to terms with his uneventful life, and Aiden, the young guide assigned to help him.
The world premiere of After Life will take place in Amsterdam on 2 June 2006 in the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ. This performance will mark the official opening of the 2006 Holland Festival.
